Timetables – Precision

Precision was one of the many small independent carriers working out of Boston and eventually New York City north into New England from the 1970s-1990s. In this carrier’s case, they began as a freight hauler with light aircraft in 1961 (moving from Beech 18s to Piper Navajos) and only gained their Part 135 scheduled passenger license in 1977. While they typically docked close to Eastern at major airports, and became an Eastern Express franchisee, after that venerable carrier’s collapse in 1991 they signed on with Northwest (along with by-then sister carrier Northeast Express) to feed NWA’s focus operation at Boston.

Financial difficulties tied to Alan Caruso’s ownership (having previously run Provincetown-Boston Airlines beyond its abilities and out of business) led to service issues in late 1993-early 1994. Northwest notified Precision and Northeast Express on May 28, 1994 that it would terminate its Airlink contract as of November 1, but on June 21, the pair of carriers declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy and ceased operations, grounding a combined 33 aircraft and about 550 staff. The liquidation process would go on into 1995. Northwest contracted Business Express (a Delta Connection carrier) to codeshare out of Boston, and this marked the end of “red tail” Airlink service in the Northeast U.S.

Precision issued timetables under their own name from their beginning in June 1977 through November 1985, and under Eastern Express in 1987-1988. They did not issue any printed or digital schedules on their own behalf during their time allied with Northwest. During their Airlink days, Precision operated the Dornier 228 19-passenger unpressurized turboprop, and we have seen photos of one of their Beech 99s sporting Northwest titles.

We’ll post Precision schedules here as we come across them; while none bear the Northwest logo, there are few online resources for this carrier and we want to honor the operations who flew under Northwest colors however we can…
